Buttermilk Rolls by Lillian Palermo

1 cup buttermilk, lukewarm
1/4 tsp. bakng soda
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
1 package dry yeast
3 tablespoons shortening
2 tablespoons hot water
2 3/4 to 3 cups flour

Disolve yeast in hot water (follow package directions). In large bowl, mix milk, baking soda, salt, egg, and shotening. Add yeast to milk mixture. Then add half flour and beat thoroughly. Add rest of the flour and form into firm dough. Knead well and shape into rolls. Let rise for one hour. Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
